What Is the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S?

The SPH-002T-P0.5S is the cable-side female housing in JST’s PH series — 4 positions, 2.0 mm pitch, friction lock. It mates with the B4B-PH-K-S vertical through-hole header, or the S4B-PH-K-S right-angle variant. The compatible crimp terminal is the SPH-002T-P0.5S (reel) or SPH-002T-P0.5L (loose), accepting 22 to 28 AWG wire. Rated 2.0 A per contact at 100 V, with operating temperature from −25 °C to +85 °C. UL listed under JST’s E60389.

The PH series has been a fixture in consumer and industrial electronics since the 1990s. Closest neighbor in the same pitch is Molex’s Pico-Lock 2.00 — but the housings do not interchange. Pico-Lock uses a positive lock; PH uses friction. Pick the wrong header and your harness won’t seat. The other commonly confused part is Molex PicoBlade — same general look, but 1.25 mm pitch, almost half the size. Measure across at least three pin centers before substituting.

Cross-Brand Alternative Connectors

If JST allocation is tight, or you’re trimming BOM cost, several drop-in or near-equivalent options exist. Compatibility tiers below tell you what’s a true plug-in versus what needs PCB redesign.

TierManufacturerAlternative PartSeriesCompatibility Notes
L1 ✓LDZY2050-042050 (PH-equivalent)Chinese PH equivalent. Drop-in to B4B-PH-K-S footprint. UL E473994 listed. 40–60% cost reduction at scale.
L1 ✓TONFULPH-2.0-4PPH-2.0Marketed as direct PH replacement. 2–3 week lead time when JST sits at 12+ weeks.
L1 ✓DaierKF2510 (2.0mm)KF-2.0Common Chinese 2.0 mm housing. Verify mating header dimensions on first article.
L2 ⚠Molex504050-0491Pico-Lock 2.00Same 2.0 mm pitch and 4 circuits, but positive lock vs PH’s friction lock. PCB footprint redesign needed.
L2 ⚠Molex50058-8400Micro-Latch 2.0Western counterpart to JST PH per common cross-reference guides. Different latch and key. Not physically interchangeable.
L2 ⚠Würth Elektronik614 004 113 22WR-WTB 2.0German-made 2.0 mm with similar electricals. Different housing — verify before substituting.
L3 ⚠HiroseDF11-4DS-2CDF112.0 mm pitch, but dual-row (2×2). Function-equivalent in some board-to-board scenarios, mechanically distinct.
Tier definitions.  L1 ✓ Mate-compatible drop-in, no design change.   L2 ⚠ Same pitch and pin count but different housing/lock — verify before substituting.   L3 ⚠ Electrically equivalent but mechanically different — PCB redesign required. These ratings come from public datasheets and are not a guarantee. Send us your drawing and we’ll do drop-in replacement validation against your specific PCB footprint.

Where the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S Is Used

Five main applications absorb most of our SPH-002T-P0.5S production volume.

🖨️

3D Printer Wire Harnesses

De-facto standard for cooling fan headers, hot-end heater cartridges, thermistor leads, and stepper motor breakouts. The 2.0 A rating handles 24 V cooling fans pulling up to 0.5 A with margin. Marlin and Klipper firmware ecosystems both default to PH-style connectors.

🔋

Lithium Battery Balance Leads

Standard 3-cell (3S) LiPo balance plug — 4 wires for B−, B1, B2, B+. PHR-5 covers 4S, PHR-7 covers 6S. Friction lock holds well in low-vibration packs; 100 V rating handles series-stacked cell voltages with margin.

✈️

RC Hobby & Drone Electronics

Heavy use in ESC-to-receiver harnesses, BEC power leads, telemetry, and powered VTX interconnects in racing drones and FPV builds. Through-hole headers make field repair practical when an RC aircraft needs a re-solder.

🤖

Servo & Robotics Wiring

Incremental encoder feedback (5V, GND, A, B), low-current 4-wire stepper breakouts, DC servo control wiring. Drag-chain and AGV applications get high-flex PUR-jacketed builds rated for millions of bend cycles.

🔌

Arduino & Maker Boards

Power and signal connector on maker-targeted PCBs. Frequent pick for 4-wire I²C extension cables (VCC, GND, SDA, SCL), NeoPixel/WS2812 LED strip drivers, ultrasonic sensors, Hall-effect rotation sensors.

🏭

Industrial Sensor Modules

Smart factory sensors, panel I/O modules, embedded controller interconnects. UL E60389 listing satisfies most industrial-control AVL requirements without re-qualification.

Frequently Asked Questions

01
Is the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S still in production?
Yes. The PH series is one of JST’s flagship product lines and shows no end-of-life signal. Direct lead times from JST authorized distribution range 8–16 weeks. We hold working inventory of SPH-002T-P0.5S housings, mating headers, and SPH-002T-P0.5S terminals to bridge that gap.
02
What is the mating connector for the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S?
The SPH-002T-P0.5S plugs into the JST B4B-PH-K-S vertical PCB header (top-entry, through-hole, 4 positions, 2.0 mm pitch). For a right-angle PCB layout, use the S4B-PH-K-S. SMT versions exist (B4B-PH-SM4-TB) but the original PH housing was designed for wave soldering.
03
What’s the difference between the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S and Molex PicoBlade?
They get confused often, but they’re not interchangeable. SPH-002T-P0.5S is 2.0 mm pitch. PicoBlade (e.g., Molex 51021-0400) is 1.25 mm — almost half the size. Visually telling them apart is unreliable. Measure across at least three pin centers and divide.
04
What wire gauge can I use with the SPH-002T-P0.5S?
22 to 28 AWG. Crimp terminal is the SPH-002T-P0.5S (reel) or SPH-002T-P0.5L (loose). Maximum insulation outer diameter is 1.5 mm. For 22 AWG silicone wire — common in 3D printer hot-end harnesses — verify the OD doesn’t exceed 1.5 mm.
05
Are there Chinese alternatives to the JST SPH-002T-P0.5S?
Yes. LDZY’s 2050 series, Daier KF-2.0, TONFUL PH-2.0, and HRB Connector’s 2050 are the most-specified PH equivalents. Drop-in mechanical replacements to JST’s footprint at 40-60% cost. For medical, aerospace, or automotive — qualify with first-article inspection before signing off.
06
Can a SPH-002T-P0.5S be used as a 3-cell lithium battery balance plug?
Yes — it’s the standard 3S balance plug in the RC and consumer drone industry. Pin order is conventionally B−, B1, B2, B+. For 4S use PHR-5, for 6S use PHR-7. Rule of thumb: N-cell pack uses PHR-(N+1).
07
What’s the difference between the SPH-002T-P0.5S and the B4B-PH-K-S?
The “R” in PHR is for the receptacle (cable-side housing). The “B” prefix in B4B-PH-K-S is for a base PCB header (vertical through-hole). They mate. JST naming: PHR = housing, B*B = vertical header, S*B = right-angle header.
08
Can SZFRS supply the matching B4B-PH-K-S header alongside the SPH-002T-P0.5S cable?
Yes. We can ship the assembled cable plus loose B4B-PH-K-S or S4B-PH-K-S headers in matched quantities, packaged for your SMT or PTH line. One PO, one supplier, one set of paperwork.
